Paris: Pakistan today was re-elected to the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for the term 2025-27. The election took place during the 33rd Session of the IOC General Assembly at UNESCO Headquarters.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Pakistan to UNESCO, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, led the Pakistani delegation at the session. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO aims to foster international cooperation in marine sciences to enhance the management of oceans, coasts, and marine resources. It also focuses on developing science-based services for sustainable ocean economies and effective warning systems for tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards. Additionally, the Commission coordinates the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-30, known as The Ocean Decade.
Pakistan’s re-election to the Executive Council of the IOC underscores its positive contributions to ocean-related scientific endeavors at UNESCO. The Executive Council convenes annually to review issues and ongoing work plans for the General Assembly.
