Islamabad: The Petroleum Division has prepared a roadmap for deregulation of the gas sector with the technical support of the World Bank. It was prepared at a meeting regarding gas sector reforms, chaired by Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and attended by the World Bank Country Director.

According to Radio Pakistan, the reform plan includes the reorganization and unbundling of Sui companies, which will involve separating the transmission, distribution, and energy businesses of these companies. Under the roadmap, the subsidy system will be restructured to ensure that only deserving consumers receive targeted relief.

The government plans to make phased progress towards market-clearing prices in the gas market. The roadmap will be presented to the Prime Minister for approval this month, after which its phased implementation will commence.

During the meeting, Ali Pervaiz Malik stated that gas sector reforms will bolster energy security and ensure transparency in prices. He emphasized that the reforms will secure the financial stability of Sui companies and create new employment opportunities.

The Minister highlighted the government's aim to establish a competitive, transparent, and efficient market in the gas sector. He also mentioned that the role of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority will be further strengthened to supervise the competitive gas market. Additionally, new opportunities will be created for private sector investment and participation in the gas sector.
