Pakistan Assumes UNSC Presidency, Pledges Collaborative Efforts for Peace

Islamabad: Pakistan is eager to collaborate with all members of the United Nations Security Council to promote unified action in accordance with the Council’s Charter and the expectations of the global community. This announcement was made by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shafqat Ali Khan, during his weekly media briefing in the city on Friday.

According to Radio Pakistan, Shafqat Ali Khan emphasized that Pakistan has taken on the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July. The country approaches this role with a profound sense of purpose, humility, and commitment. Pakistan’s strategy will consistently adhere to the UN Charter’s objectives and principles, uphold international law, and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to multilateralism.

Khan highlighted that as a nation advocating for dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan brings an impartial, balanced perspective to the Security Council, informed by its foreign policy and past experiences. The country has consistently contributed to maintaining international peace and security, including through UN peacekeeping and peace-building efforts.

The Spokesperson acknowledged the complex challenges to international peace and security in regions such as the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. He stressed that the human cost of these crises necessitates a Security Council that is responsive and effective.

During its Presidency, Pakistan aims to promote meaningful and action-oriented discussions. It plans to ensure inclusive engagement and foster constructive dialogue across all agenda items. Pakistan remains dedicated to serving as a bridge between the Security Council and the broader UN membership, driven by the belief that maintaining international peace and security is a shared responsibility.

The Presidency will host two high-level events in July: an open debate on “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” on July 22, and a briefing on “Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional and Sub-Regional Organizations: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation” on July 24. Both meetings will be chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, who will also preside over a quarterly open debate on the Question of Palestine on July 23.

Addressing the ongoing situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Khan stated that Pakistan has been highlighting the plight of Kashmiri political prisoners in India and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The Spokesperson called for the immediate release of Shabbir Ahmed Shah, a prominent Kashmiri leader who has spent over half of his seventy-two years in various jails, citing his medical condition as a pressing concern.
