New York: The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Miguel Angel Moratinos as a Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia. Moratinos, who is currently serving as Under Secretary General and High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, will take on the new role aimed at addressing growing concerns over Islamophobia worldwide.
According to Radio Pakistan, the appointment of Moratinos has been welcomed by Pakistan’s Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed. Ahmed stated that this development marks a significant milestone in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) efforts to combat Islamophobia and foster an environment of tolerance, respect, and peaceful co-existence among different faiths.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmed emphasized the importance of standing united against faith-based hatred and discrimination, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts to address these global challenges. The appointment of Moratinos is seen as a strategic move by the UN to enhance its initiatives in promoting interfaith harmony and understanding.
