Tanveer Stresses Protection of Children and Women from Malnutrition

Islamabad: Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has emphasized the importance of safeguarding children, women, and other vulnerable groups from the risks of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. This was highlighted during his meeting with Dr. Irfan Ullah, Deputy Country Director of Nutrition International Pakistan, held in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting focused on evaluating current initiatives designed to address micronutrient deficiencies, enhance maternal and child nutrition, and widen the availability of fortified staple foods throughout Pakistan. During the discussions, the participants underscored the significance of bolstering large-scale food fortification efforts, particularly in salt, wheat flour, and edible oil, as a cost-effective strategy to reach vast segments of the population.

The Minister expressed appreciation for Nutrition International's sustained technical support and emphasized the necessity to further enhance wheat flour fortification. He pointed out the importance of effectively implementing pertinent legislation and regulations at the provincial level to achieve this goal. Moreover, he instructed relevant officials to maintain close coordination with development partners and provincial authorities, ensuring that nutrition and food fortification initiatives lead to tangible improvements in public health and food security.
