Islamabad: Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has emphasized continued coordination between federal and provincial governments to ensure food security, stabilize markets, and support farmers through timely policy interventions. He was chairing a meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee to review the wheat sowing progress for Rabi 2025-26.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Federal Minister assured that there is no shortage of wheat in the country, and sufficient stocks are available to meet national requirements for the current food year. The Committee reviewed province-wise wheat sowing progress, noting positive developments in several regions.
In Punjab, wheat sowing has been completed in a timely manner with ninety percent early sowing. The province also witnessed a significant increase in the use of certified wheat seed, along with higher uptake of urea fertilizer, largely due to improved availability and comparatively lower prices. These factors are expected to contribute to higher yields and a bumper wheat crop, reflecting the supportive role of the Federal Ministry in facilitating access to quality seed and fertilizers.
In Sindh, it was informed that wheat sowing progress was satisfactory and has surpassed sowing targets. Meanwhile, in Balochistan, sowing is currently lower due to insufficient rainfall, but the shortfall is expected to be covered following upcoming rains. The meeting was informed that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a substantial portion of sowing has been completed, though sowing in snowbound areas is late.
Overall, wheat sowing targets across all provinces are expected to be achieved, ensuring food security and market stability in the coming year.
