President and PM Commit to Enhancing Press Freedom in Pakistan

Islamabad: World Press Freedom Day is being observed today, serving as a vital reminder to governments of the necessity to uphold their commitment to press freedom. This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” underscores the evolving challenges faced by the media industry.

According to Radio Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed their dedication to fostering a free and responsible press in Pakistan. In separate messages marking the occasion, they lauded media workers globally, including those in Pakistan, for their relentless efforts and sacrifices in the pursuit of truth.

President Zardari emphasized the essential role of media in promoting dialogue, spotlighting issues of social, economic, and environmental importance, exposing corruption, and advocating for marginalized communities. Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the need to protect freedom of expression, ensuring the media is not exploited for spreading misinformation, propaganda, or political agendas. He praised the media’s responsible role in addressing India’s recent water aggression and unfounded accusations through factual reporting.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, in his message, reiterated that press freedom is crucial for democracy, transparent governance, and human rights protection. He acknowledged the Pakistani media’s significant contribution to democracy, rule of law, and public awareness. The Minister commended the media for its efforts in exposing human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Israeli actions against Palestinians.

Tarar highlighted the courageous role journalists have played in raising global awareness and bringing the voices of the oppressed to international platforms. He praised the media’s national interest-first approach, especially regarding India’s aggressive designs, and its effectiveness in promoting Pakistan’s stance internationally, crucial for national security and foreign policy.

The Minister assured that the government is committed to the protection, welfare, and professional training of journalists, advocating for their right to perform their duties freely. He emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and access to information as fundamental to any democratic society. The government, he stated, is dedicated to continuing constructive dialogue with media organizations to ensure press freedom.
