Okara: Pakistan's first gender-sorted straw laboratory has been established in Okara by the Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI). This development aims to provide farmers with high-quality gender-sorted straws at affordable prices, allowing them to select the sex of animals during artificial insemination.
According to Radio Pakistan, the introduction of this technology is particularly significant for dairy farming, where female animals are crucial for increasing milk production. In the beef sector, the ability to select male animals is expected to enhance meat production. Previously, Pakistan relied on imported gender-sorted straws, which were costly and not widely available. GCLI's initiative now enables ordinary farmers to access these straws more easily.
This advancement is expected to open new opportunities for genetic improvement and economic growth in the livestock sector. To maintain the quality of the straws, GCLI has imported breeding bulls with superior traits from countries such as the United States, Brazil, and Australia.
