Islamabad: Pakistan and Uzbekistan have set a target to boost their bilateral trade to $2 billion by the year 2029. This commitment was made during talks between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Islamabad. The Uzbekistan President's visit to Pakistan spanned two days and was at the invitation of Prime Minister Sharif.
According to Radio Pakistan, the joint declaration from the visit highlighted both leaders' commitment to expanding trade, economic relations, and industrial cooperation. The two nations agreed on establishing joint management of economic or industrial zones within each country. Additionally, they decided to host the inaugural Forum of Regions in Uzbekistan later this year on dates that are yet to be determined.
The declaration also underscored the historic connection between Pakistan and Uzbekistan, rooted in their shared civilization and the Great Silk Road's legacy. The countries aim to enhance cultural partnerships by preserving joint heritage and revitalizing linguistic ties between Urdu and Uzbek. The leaders intend to strengthen people-to-people connections through cultural festivals and academic exchanges, contributing to regional peace and prosperity.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between their national media institutions. Achievements such as the 2022 Broadcasting Agreement and the joint production of the documentary "Mushtarak dillar" were acknowledged. The countries agreed to further media cooperation through events like the "Pearl of the Silk Road" International Film Festival and initiatives such as joint news bulletins and journalist exchanges.
In the realm of security and defense, Pakistan and Uzbekistan expressed readiness for continued dialogue and cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism, separatism, extremism, and drug trafficking. Emphasizing the potential in tourism and cultural exchanges, both leaders stressed the importance of enhancing people-to-people interactions.
The discussions also covered regional issues of mutual interest, with an emphasis on dialogue and peaceful engagement as crucial for addressing longtime disputes in South and Central Asia, in line with UN Resolutions. The leaders highlighted the importance of peace in Afghanistan and urged Kabul to address terrorism threats and prevent terrorist organizations from using Afghan territory against other countries.
