Pakistan: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to act on the Indus Waters Treaty. The UN Security Council's attention was drawn to the matter in a letter written by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The letter was handed over by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, to the President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, today.
According to Radio Pakistan, the letter draws the attention of the UN Security Council one year after India's decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, highlighting its grave peace, security, and humanitarian consequences. The UN Security Council has been urged to recognize the alarming situation and call upon India to restore the full implementation of the Indus Water Treaty. This includes resuming all Treaty-mandated cooperation and data-sharing without delay, desisting from any form of water coercion, and complying fully with its international obligations in good faith.
The Permanent Representative also briefed the President of the UN Security Council on the regurgitation of allegations and propaganda by India at a time when Pakistan is engaged in mediation efforts to promote regional and international peace and security. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized that the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute, a longstanding item on the UN Security Council's agenda, was the root cause of instability in South Asia, necessitating a just and lasting settlement in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
