Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to collaborate with provincial disaster management bodies to prevent future incidents similar to the recent tragedy in Swat. He made these remarks during a visit to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the NDMA.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of compiling comprehensive reports on such incidents. He revealed that approximately forty-nine people have died, with several others injured across the nation. Highlighting the advanced facilities at the NEOC, Sharif assured that the government would provide necessary support to enhance the institute’s capabilities.
Additionally, Prime Minister Sharif mentioned that he has tasked Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Minister for Climate Change Musadik Masood Malik to seek grants and investments through public-private partnerships. The aim is to build resilient infrastructure in Pakistan without resorting to loans.
In response to water security concerns and India’s actions related to the Indus Water Treaty, Sharif announced plans to construct non-controversial water storage facilities using domestic resources. He noted that despite Pakistan’s minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, it faces risks from cloudbursts and sudden glacial melting, underscoring the need for preparedness.
