United nations: Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to engage constructively in the Intergovernmental Negotiations process aimed at promoting convergence for a fair, effective, and representative reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
According to Radio Pakistan, this commitment was reiterated by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, during his address at the General Assembly Plenary. The session focused on the “Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council.”
Ambassador Ahmed highlighted the ongoing inability to reach an agreement on UNSC reforms, attributing it to the position held by a few Member States. He stated that these countries are unwilling to consider the broader interests and perspectives of the wider UN membership.
He further emphasized that these few countries are seeking “PRIVILEGE FOR SOME” instead of advocating for “REFORM FOR ALL,” and identified this stance as the biggest obstacle to achieving the desired reforms.
