Pakistan Pledges $639 Million for Polio Eradication Efforts: Ahsan


Abu dhabi: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has announced that Pakistan is pledging $639.54 million over the next four years to help secure a polio-free future. Speaking at the High-Level Pledging Moment for Polio Eradication in Abu Dhabi, he emphasized that eliminating polio in Pakistan is a moral obligation and a duty to future generations. He stated that the country is fulfilling this commitment with unity, determination, and national resolve.



According to Radio Pakistan, Ahsan Iqbal highlighted that Pakistan has made significant progress, with virus circulation now at its lowest level in decades. He noted improvements in vaccination quality, strengthened surveillance, and rising public confidence. The Minister emphasized the unified political leadership under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has declared polio eradication a top national priority. He mentioned that Pakistan has integrated its polio infrastructure into broader health sector reforms under the URAAN Pakistan initiative.



Ahsan Iqbal expressed gratitude to UAE’s President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support in protecting millions of children from polio. On the event’s sidelines, Ahsan Iqbal met with Bill Gates, founder of the Gates Foundation. During their meeting, he reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ending polio and conveyed the Prime Minister’s appreciation for Gates’ contributions to the country’s anti-polio efforts.
