Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment and support for all efforts aimed at strengthening UN peacekeeping missions.
According to Radio Pakistan, in his message on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted that over 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served in 48 missions globally during the seven-decade history of United Nations peacekeeping. Tragically, 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice for international peace and security.
Prime Minister Sharif also noted that Pakistan hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which is one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions. Its mandate is to monitor the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as recognized by the UN.
He further emphasized the urgent need for a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, while reinforcing UNMOGIP’s role and presence.
The Prime Minister called on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to the United Nations’ successful policies in maintaining international peace and security and to intensify efforts to adapt UN peacekeeping to rapidly emerging challenges.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stated that Pakistan remains committed to UN Peacekeeping as a crucial tool for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world. He highlighted the importance of a renewed political commitment to adapt UN Peacekeeping to address contemporary and future challenges, including technological innovation and strengthened regional partnerships.
