Pakistan Asserts Right to Safeguard Water Interests Amidst Tensions with India

Islamabad: The Council of Common Interests has conveyed a strong message of unity and solidarity against India’s actions, emphasizing Pakistan’s right to protect its water interests. The meeting, held in Islamabad and chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, condemned India’s actions following the Pahalgam incident.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Council underscored the importance of protecting Pakistan’s water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty, especially in light of any potential suspension or obstruction of water flow to Pakistan. The meeting saw unanimous agreement among all provincial chief ministers, reflecting a united front against India’s actions.

The Council further endorsed the federal government’s policy against the construction of new canals without mutual consent among provinces. It was decided to form a committee representing both the federation and provinces to address concerns and ensure food and ecological security. This committee is tasked with proposing solutions for long-term agricultural needs and water usage in accordance with the Water Apportionment Accord-1991 and Water Policy-2018.

Additionally, the Council resolved to return provisional approvals for new canal construction given last year, and directed the Planning Division and IRSA to consult all stakeholders to foster national cohesion and resolve outstanding issues. The meeting was attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Defense Khawaja Asif, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, alongside provincial chief ministers.
