Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has stated that there is no deadlock over the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Speaking to media persons in the Parliament House, he emphasized that the constitution is a living document undergoing continuous evolution.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Information Minister highlighted that a rigorous debate is currently taking place in Parliament concerning the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The discussions aim to ensure good governance, fortify the bond between the Federation and the provinces, and enhance Pakistan’s defense capabilities. He mentioned that the amendment has been drafted with international best practices in mind.
Tarar pointed out that Prime Minister’s initiative to withdraw immunity in the proposed amendment was a positive move. He noted that this clause has already been removed by the committee. He further explained that granting immunity to the President is a common practice worldwide, as Heads of State typically enjoy such protection.
Addressing the topic of Constitutional Courts, Attaullah Tarar remarked that this concept is prevalent globally. He noted that the debate to establish Constitutional Courts in Pakistan had been ongoing since the Charter of Democracy was signed. He stressed that it was a collective demand from major political parties, including PML-N, PPP, and Awami National Party, and that the debate had now reached a logical conclusion.
The Information Minister also mentioned that the establishment of the Constitutional Bench under the 26th Constitutional Amendment had successfully reduced workload and increased the efficiency of the courts.
