NDMA Issues Weather Alerts Amid Threat of Rain, Floods, and GLOFs

Islamabad: The National Emergencies Operation Center of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued urgent impact-based weather alerts concerning rain, urban flooding, flash floods, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) expected in various regions of the country over the next 24 to 48 hours.

According to Radio Pakistan, intense rainfall and above-normal temperatures have heightened the risk of GLOFs, sudden flash floods, damage to roads and infrastructure, isolated rain and thunderstorms, and disruption to public mobility in the northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In the Gilgit-Baltistan region, a combination of rapid glacier and snowmelt with rain has increased the likelihood of GLOFs in high-altitude valleys and surrounding areas, potentially causing rising river levels, flash floods, and damage to transportation and power infrastructure.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir is also expected to experience significant rainfall, which could lead to flooding in low-lying regions, transport disruptions, and drainage system overloads due to persistent downpours.

In Punjab, widespread rain and thunderstorms are predicted, particularly in high-altitude areas such as Murree and Galiyat, as well as in central Punjab. These weather conditions may result in urban flooding, power outages, damage to fragile structures, and traffic disruptions due to poor visibility during rain and dust spells. Islamabad is also likely to face similar weather conditions in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Balochistan is anticipated to encounter isolated rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in several cities, potentially causing damage to weak infrastructure, reduced visibility, and power interruptions.

Widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across Sindh, which could result in urban flooding, traffic disruptions, and damage to vulnerable structures and electricity lines.

NDMA has urged all provincial and district administrations to remain vigilant, activate contingency plans, and ensure that warnings are disseminated promptly in local languages. Citizens, particularly those in high-risk areas, are advised to stay updated through official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel near glacial streams, riverbanks, and flooded roads, and keep emergency kits ready.
