Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed the confidence that modernization of Pakistan Railways' infrastructure will be instrumental in positioning Pakistan as a regional trade and logistics hub. He was chairing a review meeting on the implementation of the transformation plan of Pakistan Railways in Islamabad today. The Prime Minister said Pakistan Railways is the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation for both passengers and freight. He further stated that a modern and efficient railway system will play a vital role in strengthening the country's economy, promoting trade, and enhancing regional connectivity.

According to Radio Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif also directed the authorities concerned to complete Pakistan Railways' development projects within the stipulated timelines while ensuring the highest standards of quality. He further instructed to submit proposals regarding the upgradation of the Rohri-Multan section of Main Line-1 (ML-1). The meeting was briefed on the progress of the ML-1 and ML-3 upgradation projects, Thar Coal railway connectivity, and other development initiatives.

It was informed that the detailed engineering design for the Karachi-Rohri section of ML-1 has been completed, while the upgradation of the Rohri-Nokundi section of ML-3 will be undertaken under the Public Sector Development Programme and bridge financing arrangements. The meeting was further apprised that around sixty percent work has been completed on the 112-kilometre railway track linking the Thar Coal fields with Chhor Railway Station, and the project is expected to be completed by December this year.

The meeting was told that on the Prime Minister's directives, the services of an international consultant have been engaged to implement railway sector reforms. It was said the services of schools and hospitals operated by Pakistan Railways have been outsourced, while work is being initiated on the commercialization of six major railway stations.
