J&K’s Final Status Yet to Be Decided by Free Plebiscite: Asif Khan

New york: At the UN, Pakistan has reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory whose final status is to be determined through a free and impartial plebiscite. Exercising the right to reply at the 4th Committee Meeting on Decolonization Items, Minister at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Asif Khan, highlighted the ongoing dispute and emphasized the need for a resolution through democratic means.

According to Radio Pakistan, Asif Khan recalled that India initially brought the matter to the Council but now refuses to honor its commitments under international law and the Charter of the United Nations. He expressed concerns over India’s actions, claiming they have endangered regional peace and security.

Asif Khan accused India of resorting to unprovoked aggression against Pakistan earlier this year, targeting civilians, including women and children. He stated that Pakistan exercised its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, responding in a manner aimed at military targets only. He noted that India suffered significant losses, including the downing of multiple aircraft. Asif Khan credited Pakistan’s responsible posture and international facilitation for preventing a dangerous escalation in the region.
