New york: Int’l Anti-Corruption Day is being observed today with various events and initiatives aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of combating corruption in all its forms. This annual observance has been held on 9 December since the United Nations Convention Against Corruption was adopted on 31 October 2003.
According to Radio Pakistan, the day serves as a global platform to highlight the detrimental effects of corruption on societies and economies worldwide. It encourages governments, civil society, private sector, and individuals to collaborate in eradicating corruption by promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity.
The United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which came into force in December 2005, is the first legally binding international anti-corruption instrument. It provides a comprehensive framework for countries to prevent and combat corruption. The Convention has been instrumental in fostering international cooperation and supporting the implementation of anti-corruption measures.
Through various campaigns and outreach programs, Int’l Anti-Corruption Day aims to empower citizens to demand accountability from their leaders and institutions. It underscores the role of education, community engagement, and strong legal frameworks in creating an environment where corruption cannot thrive.
