India Utilizes Torture as Suppression Tool in IIOJK

Islamabad: India is systematically using widespread torture as a state policy to crush the legitimate struggle of Kashmiris for freedom in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Radio Pakistan, it was mentioned in a report released by the Kashmir Media Service on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The report highlights that since 1989, there have been over 96,000 killings, including 7,392 custodial deaths and fake encounters.

In its first Global Torture Index 2025, the World Organization Against Torture ranked India as a ‘high-risk’ country for torture and ill-treatment. The index points to rampant custodial deaths, forced confessions, and legal impunity, with a particular focus on marginalized communities.

In Geneva, a Kashmiri delegation organized a protest outside the United Nations, demanding an end to India’s brutal practices in occupied Kashmir. Meanwhile, Indian troops have launched intense cordon and search operations in Udhampur and Samba districts. Additionally, Indian police raided the residence of Jamaat-e-Islami member Mohammad Amin Shah in Kupwara, where they seized religious books and electronic gadgets.

A complaint has been filed with India’s National Human Rights Commission, accusing Indian forces of abducting and subsequently killing three Gujjar-Bakerwal men. In a separate incident, a Village Defence Guard member shot himself dead with his rifle at his home in Samba district, increasing the toll of such deaths among Indian forces and police to 629 since 2007.
