Govt Strives to Enhance Citrus Fruit Exports, Says Tanveer

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, processing factories, and exporters in boosting the export of citrus fruits, including Kinnow.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister emphasized the government’s strategy to transform Pakistani citrus into a globally recognized brand by aiding farmers and exporters, introducing improved citrus varieties, and exploring new international markets. The focus is not only on fresh fruit exports but also on value-added citrus products such as juices and oils, which could yield higher returns in international markets.

Rana Tanveer Hussain mentioned that the government is conducting training programs and capacity-building workshops to equip growers and exporters with modern techniques and compliance standards. The aim is for Pakistani citrus fruits to maintain their presence in traditional markets while also entering new territories across Central Asia, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and the European Union.

He highlighted that registering new exporters for Uzbekistan and other Central Asian states is a crucial step towards diversifying markets and enhancing trade opportunities for local farmers and exporters. Furthermore, a recent meeting with a Russian delegation in Islamabad exemplifies how the government is expanding collaboration with partner countries to bolster citrus exports.

To ensure efficiency in the export process, more laboratories have been accredited nationwide for expedited testing and certification of agricultural products. The Department of Plant Protection (DPP) is playing a significant role in aligning Pakistan’s citrus industry with international standards and simplifying export procedures.
