Islamabad: Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari met with a delegation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by its Director Energy, Mr. Joonho Hwang. The meeting emphasized energy sector reforms in Pakistan, focusing on the privatization of distribution companies (DISCOs), the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, and identifying future areas of cooperation.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister appreciated ADB's ongoing support, particularly in promoting the Public-Private Partnership model and integrated energy planning. He stated that in the initial phase, three DISCOs will be privatized, welcoming both investment and technical assistance in this regard. Furthermore, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari highlighted the government's prioritization of clean energy, the introduction of a new tariff for electric vehicles, and the pursuit of international cooperation to enhance grid and metering systems.
The Minister also noted Pakistan's proactive measures, such as shutting down approximately 2,800 MW of fossil fuel power plants ahead of schedule as part of its environmental responsibility. He mentioned the country's ongoing efforts to gain access to green financing and carbon credits, underscoring a commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Joonho Hwang expressed pride in ADB's partnership with Pakistan's energy sector. He announced that 130 million dollars have been approved for Pakistan's energy sector, with an initial 30 million dollars immediately available. Furthermore, he assured that ADB will provide full support in the privatization process, establishment of a carbon market, modernization of transmission and distribution systems, and advancement of renewable energy projects in Pakistan.
