Islamabad: Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has announced that the government is striving to make electricity tariffs competitive to benefit the country's key economic sectors. His remarks came during a meeting with World Bank Country Director, Ms. Bolormaa Amgaabazar, in Islamabad.
According to Radio Pakistan, Sardar Awais Leghari emphasized that the Power Division is actively working on Time of Use proposals for industries following an assessment of concessional tariffs. The objective is to capitalize on the country's solar potential, offering concessional tariffs to industries to enhance energy competitiveness. The Power Division is currently in discussions with all relevant stakeholders to achieve this goal.
The Minister also highlighted that the Power Division is considering significant policy decisions to harness indigenous resources for electricity generation. He noted that recent developments in the Middle East have strengthened the government's resolve to utilize local resources.
Furthermore, the Minister pointed out a steady increase in electricity consumption in Pakistan, which he cited as evidence of the government's successful policies. The World Bank Country Director commended the Power Division's reform initiatives and reiterated the Bank's commitment to collaborating with the Ministry on key areas such as tariff rationalization, transmission and distribution network improvements, and renewable energy integration.
