Government to Boost Quality Film Production in Pakistan with Concrete Measures

Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has announced that the government will offer full support and implement concrete measures to promote quality film production in Pakistan. He made this statement while chairing a review meeting in Islamabad on Monday, which focused on evaluating the progress of various projects under the Directorate of Electronic Media and Publications (DEMP).

According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting provided updates on the Central Monitoring Project and the National Centre of Films (NCF). The Central Monitoring Project, which commenced in January 2023, is on track for completion by June this year. The session also discussed the expansion of the project's scope and technological enhancements. Minister Tarar emphasized the importance of completing the initiative on time, highlighting that the Central Monitoring Unit is a modern project that meets contemporary demands. He noted that it would aid in narrative-building and formulating an effective communication strategy, with benefits extending to the private sector, which can use the facility to analyze its content.

The DEMP administration assured the Minister of their commitment to ensuring the project's completion by June, adhering to the approved work plan. Regular review meetings will be held to monitor progress and address any challenges promptly.

The meeting also discussed the establishment of the National Centre of Films, which serves as the official custodian of the National Film Policy 2018. The NCF is responsible for coordinating and liaising with stakeholders in the film and drama industry. It plays a crucial role in implementing incentives, establishing structured linkages, agreements, and promoting Pakistan's cinema industry on global platforms.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has introduced financial incentives to revive the film industry, including exemptions on cinematographic equipment, tax relief for cinema operations and feature film production, and tax credits under the Film and Drama Finance Fund. Additionally, several Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with different countries to enhance cooperation in the film and drama sectors, facilitating content exchange, joint productions, and participation in international film festivals.
