France Urges Dialogue to Address Rising Tensions Between Pakistan and India

New York: Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont, met with a high-level parliamentary delegation from Pakistan, led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in New York on Tuesday. The meeting focused on addressing the escalating security concerns in South Asia following recent actions by India.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Pakistani delegation briefed the French Ambassador on the security developments in the region, particularly highlighting India’s recent military actions and unilateral decisions. Bilawal Bhutto informed the Ambassador about the serious consequences stemming from India’s accusation against Pakistan regarding the Pahalgam attack, which he claims were made without credible investigation or evidence.

Bilawal Bhutto criticized India’s ongoing aggressive posture, including military strikes against civilians in Pakistan and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, describing these actions as violations of international law that endanger the strategic balance in South Asia. Despite these provocations, Bhutto emphasized Pakistan’s committed adherence to international law and the UN Charter in its responses.

He cautioned against India’s efforts to establish a “new normal” of arbitrary military actions, warning of the potential ramifications in the nuclear-sensitive region. Bhutto further reiterated Pakistan’s status as a major victim of terrorism and its dedication to combating it, including terrorism allegedly supported by India, while calling for a non-politicized approach to the issue.

Highlighting the need for a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions, Bhutto urged France to facilitate a sustained ceasefire, the revival of the Indus Waters Treaty, and the initiation of a comprehensive dialogue between Pakistan and India.

Ambassador Bonnafont reaffirmed France’s support for regional peace and stability and stressed the necessity of bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan. He underscored the importance of exercising restraint, engaging in dialogue, and adhering to international commitments.
