Foreign Secretary Inaugurates Regional Consultations on Responsible AI in Military Domain

Islamabad: Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch inaugurated the Regional Consultations on Responsible AI in Military Domain in Islamabad on Tuesday. In her keynote remarks, she emphasized that Military AI is transforming warfare, highlighting a lag in legal and political frameworks in keeping pace with these technological advancements.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Foreign Secretary expressed concerns about this transformation unfolding in a fragile international landscape, which is consequently lowering the threshold for the use of force. She pointed out that in South Asia, autonomous weapon capabilities have been employed for the first time in a nuclear environment, compressing decision time during crises.

Baloch stressed the importance of anchoring global governance in the UN system, noting that REAIM offers a valuable complement to this. She highlighted the need for developing states to engage in capacity-building and regional dialogue to ensure inclusive rule-making.

Furthermore, she stated that innovation in AI must be guided by principle, with human control and judgment remaining paramount. Seventeen states from West, Central, and South Asia are participating in the two-day Regional Consultations of REAIM, organized in partnership with the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, and Spain.
