Lahore: Renowned scholar of Arabic language and literature, author, and Emeritus Professor Dr Khurshid Rizvi emphasizes the significance of Arabic among the world’s most fundamental languages.
According to Radio Pakistan, in a special interview with correspondent Qasim Bukhari on the occasion of World Arabic Language Day, Dr Khurshid Rizvi highlighted that Arabic is the representative language of the Semitic linguistic group, distinguishing it from other languages in the group that have become extinct over time. Arabic continues to be widely spoken and understood across a vast geographical region.
Dr Rizvi pointed out that Arabs and the Arabic language played a crucial role in transmitting the philosophy, science, and other disciplines of ancient Greek civilization to modern Europe. These translations significantly bolstered the Renaissance movement in Europe, unlocking new avenues for intellectual progress.
Dr Khurshid Rizvi also noted that due to its extensive use and geographical reach, Arabic has been recognized as the sixth official language of the United Nations, underscoring its global importance.
Discussing the relationship between language and economic factors, Dr Rizvi mentioned that a language thrives when it is linked to livelihoods. He cited the numerous economic opportunities the Arabic language offers, particularly referencing the substantial presence of overseas Pakistanis in Arab countries.
In response to a question, Dr Rizvi stressed the need for special attention to be given to the education and promotion of the Arabic language, considering its academic, cultural, and practical significance to meet contemporary needs.
