Better Sugarcane Crop Expected to Stabilize Sugar Prices: Tanveer

Islamabad: Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has announced that an improved sugarcane crop is anticipated this year, which he believes will contribute to stabilizing the sugar prices in the market. He shared this information during the National Assembly's question hour, highlighting the challenges faced last year when the sugarcane crop suffered due to climate change, reducing production from 6.8 million metric tons to 5.8 million metric tons. To counter the decline, 300,000 tons of sugar were imported to stabilize prices.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister assured the assembly that strategic reserves of wheat would be maintained, ensuring wheat growers receive a support price of thirty-five hundred rupees per forty kilograms. He affirmed that sufficient wheat stocks are available with PASSCO and that there will be no issues with inter-provincial movement of wheat under the wheat policy 2025-26.

Parliamentary Secretary for Industries and Production Shahid Usman informed the assembly about the government's decision to revive Pakistan Steel Mills. He stated that the Ministry of Industries and Production has moved a summary for this purpose, and two protocols have been signed with a Russian company to aid in the revival, modernization, and restructuring of the mills.

Parliamentary Secretary for Railways Muhammad Usman Awaisi reported the commencement of an anti-encroachment drive to reclaim valuable railway land. A total of 781.84 acres of Pakistan Railways land has been retrieved from July 2024 to June 2025.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry addressed points of order, revealing actions against NADRA employees involved in issuing identity certificates or cards to Afghan nationals. The government prioritizes ensuring Afghans are not registered as Pakistani citizens.

The Minister of State also confirmed that the PTI founder is receiving all facilities per the jail manual and is in good health. He noted that meetings are permitted as per the manual, with 850 people, including family and doctors, having met with the PTI founder.

In the legislative session, three bills were laid before the house: The Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 2026, The Constitution Amendment Bill, 2026, and the Companies Amendment Bill, 2026. The House is scheduled to reconvene tomorrow at eleven in the morning.
