Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has called for a coordinated global response to misinformation, arguing that disinformation, Islamophobia, and digital propaganda are transnational challenges.
According to Radio Pakistan, in an interview with WE News English, Attaullah Tarar stated that Pakistan will continue to address these issues at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. He emphasized the need for shared standards, international cooperation, and greater accountability from social media platforms.
The Information Minister highlighted that Pakistan experienced a surge of misinformation following the Sydney shooting incident, with false claims spreading rapidly on social media. He mentioned that the government activated its fact-checking mechanisms to combat inaccurate reporting. Additionally, he explained that the Ministry of Information has established official ‘fake news buster’ social media accounts and a dedicated verification cell to monitor digital platforms, identify false content, and issue corrections.
