Asim Calls for Setting Up Global Early-Warning System to Tackle Maritime Threats

Islamabad: Pakistan has called for adopting a collaborative approach to emerging maritime technologies, including AI and autonomous systems, to avoid turning the seas into an arena of conflict. Delivering the national statement at the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate on ‘Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation, and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges,’ Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized the importance of establishing a global early-warning and rapid-response mechanism to address piracy, trafficking, illegal fishing, and maritime accidents in real time.

According to Radio Pakistan, Ahmad highlighted that as maritime technology advances, there is a pressing need to ensure these innovations do not contribute to conflict but rather enhance maritime security for all nations. He stressed the urgent requirement for international collaboration to effectively monitor and respond to maritime threats.

Ahmad underscored the critical role of the global community in developing a proactive strategy that integrates cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Such technologies could be pivotal in detecting and mitigating threats before they escalate into serious conflicts. Ahmad’s proposals aim to foster peace and stability within maritime regions, ensuring safe and secure seas for all.
