Analyst Hails DPM Dar’s EU Visit to Uplift National Economy

Islamabad: Dr. Usman Chohan, an economist, has expressed optimism regarding Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent engagement with European leadership, aimed at positioning Pakistan within emerging markets. The visit is seen as a step towards enhancing economic ties and exploring new opportunities between Pakistan and the European Union (EU).

According to Radio Pakistan, Dr. Chohan emphasized the mutual benefits of strengthening EU-Pakistan relations, noting that the EU, comprising 27 countries, seeks to diversify its market presence beyond the United States. He highlighted Pakistan’s attainment of the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status, which provides significant access to European markets. This status is considered crucial as it positions Pakistan as a competitive player against other emerging markets vying for entry into the EU.

Dr. Chohan acknowledged that while Pakistan does not seek preferential treatment, its exports are capable of competing in the European markets. He also pointed out the challenges in meeting the political and social inclusion conditions tied to the GSP+ status, due to varying perspectives within the EU on these matters. Additionally, he noted the diverse opinions within the EU regarding its alignment with major global powers such as the United States, China, and Russia.
