Ahsan Iqbal Calls for Swift Completion of Gwadar Projects to Boost Economy

Islamabad: Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has emphasized the urgent need for integrating local communities, especially those in the fishing sector, into the economic development initiatives surrounding Gwadar. During a high-level review meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on the Operationalization of Gwadar Port, he highlighted the importance of connecting the fisheries sector and the broader Blue Economy with national programs like the Uraan Pakistan Export Enhancement Strategy.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister called for a cohesive approach that involves road, rail, and port connectivity to bolster trade and economic integration with the region. He urged the early completion of vital infrastructure projects, particularly the N-85 and Coastal Highway, to enhance logistics and port accessibility. Additionally, Ahsan Iqbal reviewed the progress of the Safe City Project in Gwadar and instructed the Ministry of Interior and the Government of Balochistan to ensure it is implemented on time.

Ahsan Iqbal further directed the acceleration of the ML-4 railway project and proposed developing Gwadar as a dedicated mining port, equipped with appropriate ore-handling facilities to support Balochistan’s mining sector. He stressed the importance of consistent project leadership and urged the provincial government to appoint full-time, competent project directors to prevent administrative delays.

To attract foreign investment, the Minister suggested creating a secure residential area for international staff and visitors, inspired by successful models like Sharm El Sheikh and Dammam. He also advocated for the development of tourism infrastructure in Gwadar, including coastal resorts, and invited international hospitality brands to invest in the region.
