On Wednesday, a resolution was tabled in the Punjab Assembly to designate kite and string-making as non-bailable offenses. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA, Hina Parvez Butt, moved the resolution citing mounting concerns over the rise in incidents involving stray kite strings across the province. The resolution highlighted the tragic loss of lives in Punjab due to stray kite strings. It also mentioned the Punjab police's failure to control the increasing incidents. PML-N MPA called upon the Punjab Assembly to declare kite and string-making as non-bailable offenses. Furthermore, the judges have been requested to refrain from granting bail to individuals charged under these offenses. It should be noted that the stray kite strings have become a major threat to citizens across different parts of the country. They've injured multiple individuals critically. Last week, the Karachi commissioner imposed a ban on both the sale and flying of kites in the metropolitan. The Ministry of Interior has dismissed a circulating notification claiming that the federal government has declared Eid ul Fitr holidays from April 9 to 12 as 'fake.' 'In continuation of cabinet division's circular No 10-20/2023 Min-II dated 23rd December, it is for general information that the prime minister is pleased to declare 9 April 2024 to 12th April 2024 (Tuesday to Friday) as a public holiday on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr,' the viral notification stated. Reacting to the notification, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior stated that no such decision has been made yet. He added that a regular notification will be issued once the government decides about the Eid holidays. It is pertinent to mention that this is the second time during the last few days that a fake notification regarding the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays has been shared on social media. According to the previous notification, the federal government has announced Eid-ul-Fitr holidays from April 9 until April 12. Moreover, another notifi cation regarding a 15% allowance for federal government employees was also circulated on social media. The notification stated that all employees from grades 1 to 22 would receive an allowance of 15% of their basic pay for Eid-ul-Fitr. However, both notifications were dismissed as fake by the relevant ministries, yet no action has been taken against those responsible for it. On the other hand, the government of Punjab has announced nine holidays for the students of Daanish Schools across the province. In a notification issued by the provincial government, these schools will remain closed from April 6 until April 14. The notification added that students are allowed to leave on April 5 following the conclusion of classes. Crime rate in Islamabad has alarmingly risen during the tenure of Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan as Inspector General (IG). During the tenure, the capital city has experienced a significant surge in various criminal activities, according to recent police data. From May 21, 2022, to March 29, 2024, the federal capital recorded a staggering total of 12,786 incidents, painting a grim picture of the security situation. This is also the same period when the previous ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was ousted from the government with a vote of no confidence. Among the most concerning trends are the rampant thefts and robberies plaguing the city. Vehicle thefts alone have surpassed Rs3 billion, while motorcycle thefts amounted to nearly Rs1 billion during this period. These thefts not only result in financial losses but also contribute to a sense of insecurity among residents. Moreover, the data revealed a disturbing number of homicides, with 235 reported cases during the stated timeframe. This surge in violen t crime is deeply troubling and underscores the need for urgent action to address the root causes of such incidents. Another alarming statistic is the prevalence of mobile phone snatching, with over 5,000 reported cases recorded in the same period. Such crimes not only result in financial losses but also pose a threat to personal safety and privacy. Additionally, the data highlights a disturbing trend of kidnapping cases, with 812 reported incidents. Of particular concern are the cases involving sexual assault on women, which numbered over a hundred. These incidents reflect a grave violation of human rights and demand a swift and robust response from law enforcement authorities. Despite efforts to combat crime, the recovery rate of stolen vehicles remains relatively low, with only 375 out of the 2,073 stolen vehicles successfully recovered.
