Pakistan is Raising Taxes Even Further to Secure IMF Loan

In a final attempt to secure a stalled rescue package with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Saturday that the federal government has implemented several changes to its fiscal year 2023-2024 budget.

These changes have been introduced in hopes of reaching an agreement with the IMF and addressing the concerns that have hindered progress thus far. This would help Pakistan secure the awaited IMF loan.

While talking to the National Assembly, the Finance Minister said that “Pakistan and IMF had detailed negotiations as a last effort to complete the pending review”.

To address the fiscal deficit for the upcoming fiscal year, the federal government plans to implement a series of measures, including raising Rs. 215 billion through new taxes and reducing spending by Rs. 85 billion, stated Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

Similarly, FBR’s tax collection has increased from Rs. 9,200 billion to Rs. 9,415 billion. The overall budget deficit will also be reduced by Rs. 300 billion.

He emphasized the importance of taking the public into confidence regarding the success of the ninth review with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), acknowledging that there had been concerns and uncertainties surrounding the outcome of the review.

Finally, he added that talks with IMF have been ongoing for three days and the conclusion will be added to the Finance Ministry’s website once it is finalized.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met with IMF’s managing director Kristalina Georgieva ahead of his departure to London.

The meeting took place prior to the Prime Minister’s departure for London. During his visit to Paris, Shehbaz Sharif had a total of three meetings with representatives from the IMF.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to successfully completing the IMF program. He acknowledged the IMF’s perspective on comprehending the economic realities faced by Pakistan. The premier emphasized Pakistan’s determination to fulfill all its commitments, aiming to overcome the country’s severe economic challenges.

12-Year-Old Dies Due to Out-of-Control Sacrificial Animal

A 12-year-old boy named Ibrahim lost his life as a sacrificial animal he was walking became uncontrollable.

A video of the incident was shared on social media, showing the bull running with the boy caught in the rope while people tried to catch the animal. Ibrahim lived in the Sector 11-G area of New Karachi.

As he struggled to free himself, the rope became tangled around his legs and he was dragged for a kilometer, causing serious injuries. People nearby quickly tried to help and chased after the bull to save the boy. It took some time before they were able to intervene and untangle him.

Ibrahim was taken to a hospital by emergency services but sadly, his injuries were too severe and he passed away. Ibrahim was known for his playful and innocent nature. He was the second of four siblings and his father worked in a cloth shop.

DHA Karachi Will Not Let “Non-DHA” Residents Visit Nisar Park

The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has implemented a policy that restricts access to Nisar Shaheed Park in DHA Phase VI to residents only. This policy has raised concerns about discrimination.

The housing authority announced this restriction via a tweet, which emphasized the importance of following DHA management procedures when entering the park to maintain a friendly and peaceful environment.

The tweet also stated that DHA residents must visit the park with their family members and must adhere to a dress code. The dress code requires visitors to be “appropriately dressed,” either in a sports kit or in joggers paired with Shalwar Kameez or pants and a shirt.

Non-DHA residents are not allowed entry, regardless of whether they are accompanied by their families or not. The tweet did not provide any information about how non-DHA residents would be identified. Despite attempts to reach out for clarification, DHA spokesperson Farrukh Rizvi did not respond.

Pakistan Railways Massively Reduces Fares for Eid ul Adha

In a move to facilitate travelers during the festive season of Eid ul Adha, Pakistan Railways (PR) has made a remarkable announcement.

PR has decided to offer a substantial discount on fares for all passenger trains and classes.

According to an official notification, the fares have been reduced by a massive 33%.

This discount will be applicable for the entire duration of the three-day celebration.

To ensure the effective implementation of this decision, the Chief Marketing Manager (CMM) PR has instructed Divisional Superintendents of major cities including Karachi, Quetta, Sukkur, Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar to ensure compliance with the directives.

In a separate development, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national flag carrier, has also joined in the spirit of the occasion.

PIA has announced a 10% discount on domestic flights for the three days of Eid ul Adha.

Rs30b loans given to youth over last five months, NA told

The National Assembly was informed today that loans worth thirty billion rupees have been given to fifty thousand youth under the Prime Minister Youth Program over the last five months.

Special Assistant on Youth Affairs Shaza Fatima Khawaja, rising on a point of order, highlighted the initiatives taken by the present government to create opportunities for the youth.

She said it is the first time that loans have also been given in the agriculture sector including for seed, fertilizers and purchase of other agricultural inputs.

Shaza Fatima said training has been provided to sixty thousand youth in various areas including Information Technology, whilst training of another forty thousand youth is in progress.

The Special Assistant said the budget for the next fiscal year envisages allocation of eighty billion rupees for special initiatives. Under this, ten billion rupees have been allocated for laptop scheme, ten billion rupees for soft loans and five billion rupees each for green revolution fund, women empowerment, IT and skills development. She said one hundred thousand laptops will be distributed amongst the students this year on merit.

The Special Assistant said sports are also being promoted to engage the youth in healthy activities.

Responding to the points of members, Minister for Water Resources Khurshid Shah said at present sufficient water is available to meet the requirements of the provinces. He said Balochistan is being provided as per their demand and capacity.

The National Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution acknowledging the contribution of international organizations, civil society and the international Diaspora of Pakistan in the fight against climate change and their assistance in rehabilitation of vulnerable communities affected by climate induced disaster.

The resolution was moved by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Romina Khurshid Alam.

The resolution recognized the urgent need for global cooperation to combat climate change and mitigate its adverse impacts.

The resolution emphasized the importance of collective actions to protect and uplift the vulnerable communities in the face of climate related challenges.

The House expressed deep appreciation to Islamic Relief Worldwide as well as the United Nations for their vital role in steering Pakistan’s climate action. Their initiatives have supported development of climate resilient infrastructure, enhanced disaster risk management systems and promoted sustainable livelihoods.

The House encouraged the Government of Pakistan to strengthen collaboration with international organizations, leveraging their expertise and resources, to enhance country’s climate change mitigation policies and disaster risk reduction strategies. It also called upon the international organizations to continue supporting Pakistan’s efforts to tackle climate change through knowledge sharing.

The resolution recognized the invaluable contributions made by Pakistani philanthropists abroad and within Pakistan towards fostering national economic growth, strengthening relations between the nation and its diaspora.

The House strongly advocated for the integration of gender mainstreaming and inclusivity in all climate-related interventions.

PM Shehbaz reiterates Pakistan’s commitment to complete IMF program

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to complete the program with the International Monetary Fund.

Talking to Managing Director IMF Kristalina Georgieva in Paris, he appreciated MD IMF for considering economic realities of Pakistan. He said Pakistan is determined to fulfill its all commitments.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan values the world's support to overcome its severe economic challenges.

He said floods last year increased the troubles for the country but the government provided relief to its people. He said government desires to maintain balance between people's relief and economic realities of the country.

He said inevitable measures will have to be taken to overcome the economic crisis of the last four years.

Shehbaz Sharif assured the Managing Director that Pakistan will continue to fulfill its commitment with international community.

The Managing Director appreciated the commitment of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan.
