Senate Approves Constitution (Twenty-seventh Amendment) Bill, 2025


Islamabad: The Senate today passed the Constitution (Twenty-seventh Amendment) Bill, 2025, following its approval with amendments by the National Assembly. Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the Bill to the House.



According to Radio Pakistan, the Bill secured the support of sixty-four members, meeting the requirement of not less than two-thirds of the total membership of the House. Leader of the House and Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar expressed gratitude to all Senators who voted in favor of the Bill. He described the day as historic, marking the completion of the 27th Amendment process to the Constitution of Pakistan in accordance with legal and constitutional protocols.



Earlier, the Minister for Law and Justice briefed the House on the key features and amendments made in the Bill. He highlighted the clarification of the position of Chief Justice of Pakistan, stating that the current Chief Justice will retain his office. Subsequently, the senior-most among the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court will assume the role of Chief Justice of Pakistan.



Additionally, the Minister noted the insertion of the term ‘Federal Constitutional Court’ in clause 2 (A) of Article 6. This clause emphasizes that no act of high treason shall be validated by any court in the country.
