National Assembly Speaker Asks for Coordinated Efforts for Drainage of Water from Areas Inundated by Torrential Rains in Sindh
Islamabad: Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly has stressed for coordinated efforts by the Irrigation Department, SIDA and WAPDA for de- watering and drainage activities in the areas, inundated by the torrential rains in Sindh.
She said that drainage of rain water needs to be managed and regulated till its disposal into the sea. She feared that the continued unregulated flow of drainage water would add to the misery of people in Badin and Mirpur Khas Districts.
She made these observations while chairing a meeting with Representatives of Sindh Irrigation Department, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) and WAPDA in Parliament House, Islamabad. MNAs from the affected districts of Sindh also attended the meeting.
The Speaker directed the concerned authorities to prepare future strategy and planning in order to avert such kind of natural disasters which were experienced by the people of Sindh in respect of unprecedented floods and rainfalls since last two years. Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that accumulated rain water being drained from the upper districts would ultimately affect Badin before it reaches the sea.
She stressed for regulated and managed drainage of water through the available drainage infrastructure in order to minimize further devastation besides making maximum land available for the Rabih crop sowing.
The Secretary Irrigation Department, Sindh while apprising the Parliamentarians about the measures initiated for de-watering and drainage of water said that disposal areas and routes have been identified by the Irrigation Department and de-watering process was in progress through pumping and gravity flow.
He said that Dhoro Puran Outfall Drain (DPOD) was effectively carrying water however, due to multiple breaches in Kadhan Pateji Outfall Drain (KPOD) the drainage process was not being effectively carried out. He assured the parliamentarians that rectification of the breaches and removal of obstruction in KPOD would improve the situation in coming days.
He further assured that by the mid of next month maximum land would be reclaimed for Rabbi Crop sowing. The Parliamentarians also conveyed problems in their respective districts. They were assured that the drainage/de-watering activities would be carried out with their consultation.
The MNAs who attended the meeting were Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Nawab Yousaf Talpur, Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jillani, Dr. Talat Mehesar, Mr. Roshan-ud-din Junejo, Mrs. Shamshad Bachani, Mr. Muhammad Jadam Mangrio and Senator ughra Imam.
