Meeting on Balochistan adopts strategy to pursue political negotiations in province

Islamabad: At a high level meeting held in the Presidency, the second on Balochistan today, the federal government authorised the provincial government of Baluchistan to begin dialogue with all political forces in the province and at the same time identified measures for strengthening the capacity of the police, levies and law enforcing agencies to effectively fight the lawless elements to restore peace and normalcy to the province.

Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that this was the second meeting in the Presidency today on Balochistan devoted only to law and order, the first one being on the development projects in the province.

The law and order meeting was also attended by the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, A. Rehman Malik, Federal Minister for Interior, Governor Balochistan, Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Chief Minister Balochistan, Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani, Mr. M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President, senator Dr. Babar Awan, Mr. Zafarullah Zehri, Home minister Balochistan, DG ISI, Khawaja M. Siddiq Akbar, Secretary interior, Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar, Mir Ahmad Buksh Lehri, Chief Secretary Balochistan, DG IB, IGFC, Balochistan, Mr. Zafar Baloch, Home Secy Balochistan, IG Police Balochistan and other high officials.

Heads of relevant departments gave detailed briefings on the current status of law and order, issues and problems and the steps being taken by the relevant organisations to maintain peace and security in Balochistan were discussed during the meeting. Interior Minister Rehman Malik also gave an overview of the security situation in the province.

The Spokesperson said that the issue of missing persons was also discussed. The meeting was informed that a large number of missing persons had been traced while those still missing, numbering about fifty, were being traced.

President Zardari directed that necessary resources should be made available to complete the developmental projects ahead of schedule to provide a congenial atmosphere for peace and security in the province.

The President said that while the provincial government should engage all sections of society including political parties, the tribal elders, academicians and the local population to hammer out a consensus solution the administration should also take appropriate measures to strengthen the law enforcing agencies to effectively deal with the issues of law and order. The President also called for regular periodic meeting on the law and order situation in the province to review the progress made on the decisions taken from time to time, Farhatullah Babar said.
