Islamabad: In order to ensure accelerated provision of rescue and relief services to the flood affectees of Sindh, the Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is currently visiting the flood hit areas of Sindh. As a part of the visit, the Chairman NDMA also accompanied the Speaker National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza, to personally gauge the scale of damage and rescue and relief requirements in district Badin.
The Speaker National Assembly, during the visit of district Badin apprised that nearly three months were required to bring the situation to normalcy in the district. She urged the philanthropists and the international humanitarian community to extend help in this hour of need.
During the visit, the Chairman NDMA, Dr. Zafar Qadir informed that 9 Lacs water purification tablets, 17,700 tents have been dispatched to the flood affected areas of Sindh and 27000 family ration packs have also been distributed among the flood affectees of districts Badin, Mirpur Khas, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Tharparkar (Mithi), Umar Kot and Hyderabad.
He also informed that NDMA is introducing a new and revolutionary concept of telemedicine with the mission to provide swift medical treatment to disaster hit people on modern lines to save precious lives on real time basis. Dr. Zafar Qadir said that so far the rescue and relief initiative was funded entirely by the Federal and the Sindh governments.
He added that 31 lives were lost due to the recent floods, besides around 60 % of cotton crop was damaged in the flood hit areas, while the Sugar cane crop was not affected because the height of the sugar cane is three feet above the water level, he added.
