Jerusalem (UNA-OIC) The Arab Tourism Organization on Friday announced the selection of Jerusalem as the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2018.

ATO President Dr. Bandar bin Fahd al-Fuhaid said the naming of Jerusalem as the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2018 came upon a proposal put forward by the Arab Tourism Organization during the meetings of the 20th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Tourism, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on December 6.

Al-Fuhaid thanked Chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) Prince Sultan bin Salman, the honorary president of the Arab Tourism Organization, for his support and follow-up to this decision. He also expressed appreciation of the constant support provided by the Arab ministers of tourism and the Arab League to the Organization to achieve its mission in supporting tourism in the Arab world.

ATO chief affirmed that the choice of Jerusalem as the Capital of Arab Tourism reflects the interest of the Organization and the Arab Tourism Ministerial Council in highlighting the historical and religious status of the city and consolidating its place in the Arab memory. It also reflects the attention given by the Arab leaders and Secretary General of the Arab League to the city of Jerusalem, which will maintain its Arab and Islamic character and identity.

Al-Fuhaid pointed out that this event, which is held each year in an Arab capital city, is featuring many tourism and heritage activities that highlight both the tourist and historical importance of the city.
